Neighborhood History & Restaurant Reviews
The picture to the left shows the Nepenthe site before construction. When Safeway grocery store was built in 1989, that developer cut into the hillside and all the dirt that was removed was dumped on the site that is now Nepenthe. Developers, John Miller and Jack Sheehan had a vision for the 'Hill of Fill' and that vision has become one of the most popular subdivisions in Sedona.

All the units at Nepenthe have been built and sold. The first escrow closed in June of 1996 and the last unit was built and closed in December of 1999. Homes are now available on the resale market and range in price from $225,000 thru $370,000

Nepenthe patio homes are most closely related to townhomes by definition. There is no one above you or below you. They all have attached one or two car garages, and also feature adjoining walls, not common walls, for better soundproofing. Most importantly you are actually purchasing the land and not 'air space' which is what you are buying in a condominium type structure.

This is not a gated community. However, please note that areas of million dollar homes in Sedona that are gated frequently leave their gates open as Sedona is a very, very, low crime rate area. The actual subdivisions that are gated are minimal.

Nepenthe is NOT an age restricted community. There is only one age restrictedcommunity in Sedona and that is a mobile home park. We are also not a pet restricted community and do allow domestic pets without any height or weight limitations. Each home has an enclosed backyard and everyone with pets is considerate of their neighbors.

There are 182 units on 25 beautifully landscaped acres. There is a pool and spa on the property. The pool is heated from May1 through Oct. 30 each year and the spa is heated daily all year. There is no gym or community type meeting room.

Some of our homes have views. Others offer privacy and/or a spacious feeling in their backyards.

Maureen's November Restaurant Review - So many new restaurants, so little time!!

Sedona has it’s share of Oldie but Goodies that have been around for a long while and earned their stars. But it’s always fun to try some of the new ones. There are two new restaurants in the vicinity of the former “Y” now “X”. Hogs Barbeque from Cottonwood has opened where Pasta Casa used to be (Pasta Casa moved to Cottonwood). All the reviews on HOGS have been great, both from here and Cottonwood. Hogs is located on the west side of Hwy 179 next to the flag store. Across the street is the new Kens Creekside that used to be Roberts Creekside. I haven’t heard any food reviews yet but I know it is a great location for patio dining above the creek.

Casa Bonita

Another new restaurant and without a doubt the best Mexican food in Sedona. The best news is that it is within walking distance so you can enjoy those Margaritas and not worry about driving. Casa Bonita is located in the Basha’s shopping center. The location had been an oriental restaurant for many years but has been totally renovated with a vibrant Mexican décor similar to many of the restaurants we visit in Rocky Point. The food is authentic and reminds us of our favorite restaurant South of the border. The chips and hot sauce are excellent. But be sure and save room for the dessert. They have the best apple dessert, similar to a hot apple turnover but made with a tortilla filled with apple and deep fried, it is served with vanilla ice cream and both are topped with a caramel sauce. It is worth every calorie and carb. This family run business also has locations in Cottonwood and Flagstaff.

Szechuan Restaurant and Martini Bar

Another great new restaurant located at Old Marketplace on Hwy 89A in West Sedona. This restaurant has been open less than one month and for dinner, reservations are a must. We went there during the first week on a Monday evening and had a 30 minute wait. That time we opted for Casa Bonita rather than wait. We went back, a week later, with reservations for six people. Now we know why it’s so popular. The ambiance is wonderful and the food is great. It is your typical Chinese menu and also includes a sushi bar, if you are so inclined. We were seated at one of those big round tables with the lazy susan in the middle. We had two Pu Pu platters as appetizers, each person had one main dish, which we all shared and each person had two drinks. The total bill including tax and tip was $30 per person. Service could have been slightly better, our finished dishes sat in front of us for a little too long. Noteworthy was the fact that there were a significant amount of Oriental customers and of course they would know where to find the best Oriental food. They also have a second location with the same name in Flagstaff.

Pinon Bistro

A very small, intimate, reasonably priced ( Filet for $24.95) restaurant in Cottonwood. It is across the highway from Home Depot and next to Coldwell Banker Real Estate office. Very nice décor which changes occasionally and spotlights a different local artist. This establishment is owned and run exclusively by two ladies formerly from Maine. It is closed for two months in the summer when they go back for a vacation. They had the same type restaurant in Maine for many years. One works the front of the house while the other does all the cooking. They change the menu weekly with the exception of the Filet. It has been my experience that the filet is usually the highest priced entrée. We have always been served the most wonderful almonds as an appetizer and bread that is, of course, home made. The Crab cakes as an appetizer or a meal are just fantastic. They also specialize in the smaller wine vineyards and again we have always been very satisfied with the selection and knowledgeable descriptions. As always in Arizona, dress is casual, however it is not a place that I would wear jeans. Some people would, but it has that simple elegant atmosphere that makes you want to dress up a little bit.
